Dear Madelaine,
After years of living in a modern space with mostly new and minimal furniture and decor (think a certain Scandinavian four letter word) I’ve been thinking about adding a little more ornament and traditional charm, especially after binging shows like Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age. Only I have no idea how to bring that grand scale and lush details to my NYC apartment; where do I start?
Great question! We are definitely seeing a resurgence in classical details and vintage styles, and there are many ways to layer vintage charm into a more modern space to create a home that is uniquely you. Here are some of my favorites to get you started:
1. Plenty of Passementerie
Passementerie is the French term for trimming; corded edges, braids, fringes, tapes, and tassels, and they are all coming back in a big way. Think tassel trim on the leading edge of drapery panels (held back with larger tassel tie backs of course), braided cord or brush fringe on the edge of pillows, or decorative tape on the edge of lampshades. These are a great way to add small splashes of color, texture, and vintage appeal in space, especially when mixed with more modern fabrics (a little trim is just the thing to soften a bold geometric print) and contemporary furniture.
2. Gleaming Gilded Mirrors (and picture frames)
I am so excited that ornate gilded mirrors (and picture frames) are making a comeback, especially when paired with simpler and more contemporary furniture (like a modern entryway credenza). When everything in a home is of the same time period it can feel quite flat, and with their inherently reflective surface, mirrors are a natural fit to add some vintage sparkle and charm.
3. Painted Wood Furniture
We are undoubtedly experiencing a resurgence of expertly painted wood furniture. This is not single solid color or DIY sponge painting, but meticulously handcrafted finishing with variation, distressing, and glazed details in a rainbow of colors. We are also seeing more folk art and figural motifs, particularly on wood beds (headboard, footboards, and side rails) and cabinet faces. These techniques highlight the value of the human hand in an increasingly machine age, and are a great way to give an older (already vintage!) piece new life.
