Dear Madelaine,
I recently moved to a new apartment and am so excited to finally have a balcony…only apart from a table and chairs I’m not sure what else to do with it. Do you have any suggestions on how to make a small balcony feel like a private paradise?
Of course I do! Also congrats; private outdoor space is an NYC milestone, and not gonna lie, I’m a little jealous. Here are 3 tips for a beautiful balcony:
1. Leverage your vertical space!
A small footprint doesn’t have to mean a small impact. I love these tall plant stands. Not only do they let you display up to 5 levels of potted and hanging plants, but they make a great privacy screen for close neighbors.
2. But don’t forget the floor!
An outdoor rug is a great way to create a luxurious feel under bare feet when you kick off your sandals. Ruggable for example has a line of uv stable outdoor rugs in a huge variety of colors and styles; they feel great and can really elevate your outdoor space.
3. Don’t forget the lighting!
Look for pieces that can be moved easily and do at least two jobs. For example, storage ottomans make the perfect footrest, offer additional seating for parties, hidden storage (great for extra blankets), and the tops can be flipped to create extra accent tables!
