Beyond Bedroom Basics

Dear Madelaine,

I finally decided to take the plunge and make my bedroom the sanctuary I always (literally) dreamed of. I want to make smart choices that will happily serve me for at least several years. Where do I start? What are the latest styles that won’t feel outdated in 5 years?

First off, congratulations! I’m so excited for the dream bedroom that you’ll be creating, and for how well you will be relaxing and sleeping. While styles and aesthetics (I hate to use the word “trends”) will always be changing, there are several directions beyond bedroom basics that I think will stand you in good stead for quite a few years to come.

Bedroom Walls

1. Not so simple walls

Increasingly people are looking for their walls themselves, and not just the artwork placed on them, to make a statement. Whether it’s a richly patterned wallpaper, a textured grass cloth (or vinyl!) treatment, a luminous limewash paint, or the addition of historic trims (crown molding, chair rails, and picture molding are all making a comeback), once quiet bedrooms are doubling down on character.

2. Layered Drapery

I think more people are understanding the value of layering their bedroom window treatments. I am a huge proponent of the 3 layer strategy: a privacy sheer, a blackout roller or roman shade, and drapery panels. Whenever possible I also like to add a cornice for visual continuity (and to conceal all the hardware!) Drapery can also be used in lieu of closet doors (a great space saving solution!) or a headboard, and using the same fabric in multiple ways around a room lends an elevated feeling of cohesion with the softness of a cocoon that is perfectly suited to a personal sanctuary.

3. Simplified bedding

As much as I love a pile of decorative pillows with rich fabrics and ornate trims, there is a drive towards a simplification and unfussing of our beds. We’re seeing more solids and textures rather than printed patterns, more subtle earth tones rather than bold jewel tones, and dare I say it, fewer pillows. Think 2-4 sleeping pillows and a decorative lumbar pillow – maybe swapping the back row of sleeping pillows for euro shams, but that’s it. It’s relaxed and easy, but still sophisticated and elegant.
