Dear Madelaine,
I’m interested in updating my home decor, but don’t want it to be a major project. Are there are easy things I can do (especially if I’m doing it myself) that will make a big difference?
Of course there are! I could probably write an entire novel on this, but I am going to exercise some restraint and keep it to 4 high impact, low effort suggestions you may not have considered.

1. Add fun wallpaper
I love wallpaper, especially when it’s this fun! Adding a whimsical print, like this one from Spoonflower, completely changes the character of the space, and there are so many easy to install options now. If you’re open to working with a professional wallpaper hanger (always recommended) I am really excited about rich and unusual textures. Of course grass cloths are the first that come to mind, but there are so many interesting specialty papers available, from embroidered felts to metallic corks to woven tatami mats. The sculptural performance vinyl wall coverings in particular are environmentally friendly, durable, antimicrobial. and available in a huge range of colors, patterns, and textures. I love that they work equally well in wet and dry spaces, so they are perfect for creating cohesive primary suites, and they are tough enough to withstand high traffic areas like entries and kitchens.
2. Anywhere Lights
Even the boldest DIYers have been stymied by electrical work, particularly relocating or adding wiring for new fixtures. Enter the cordless rechargeable light to the rescue. These fantastic fixtures can be installed in a matter of minutes, adding accent lighting wherever needed. I am particularly partial to these dimmable wall sconces and picture lights from UK based line Pooky. And while they have a wide variety of shades to choose from, you can also opt for just a fixture and bulb set, then order your own shades (Etsy has a great selection) for a combination that is truly one of a kind.

3. Feeling Felt
Once reserved for commercial projects like office conference rooms and libraries, felt panels, like the ones from Felt Right, have moved into the residential space in a major way. They are available in a myriad of colors, patterns, shapes, sizes, and even textures. They are so easy to install with adhesive tabs and can be adjusted over time for a truly adaptable and sensory decor element, not to mention their terrific acoustic properties. As a bonus they are also pinnable, so they are perfect additions for that home office/music room/art salon/yoga studio.
4: Don’t Forget the Hardware
One of the easiest and highest impact ways to breathe new life into a room or piece of furniture (or kitchen…) is to change the hardware. Forget the basic black knob that came with your bedside table and change it out for a cast brass beauty. Builder’s grade door knobs and levers can easily be upgraded to something with more style (just make sure to check the lockset requirements) and even light switches and cover plates can be swapped out in minutes for options with lots more style. The Boutique Handle Co., Nostalgic Warehouse, Modern Matter, and of course Etsy are all fantastic resources, with something for every aesthetic. They may seem like small touches, but especially as the elements we touch on a regular basis, they can make a huge difference.
