These clients had recently moved into a new and larger apartment in a historic carriage house with their young daughter and beloved dog. They wanted to replace all of their outdated and small scale furniture as well as leverage the additional space to create an inspiring home office.
Our primary goals were to create an elegant and comfortable lounge area for entertaining and relaxing as a family, design a beautiful and flexible space for family dining with the capacity to expand for larger gatherings, define a compact yet comfortable space to work from home, and add as much closed storage as possible while restoring some of the historic character striped away in a previous renovation and maintaining a cohesive color palette throughout the home.
We begin every project with a set of principles that come from our client’s own words:
The key moves here are: closing the large opening between the center of the living space and the stair hall, reducing and framing the openings from the stair hall to the living and dining rooms, lining the stair hall with full height glass-door bookcases, adding partitions with sliding pocket french doors to create a bright and airy home office, incorporating an extendable dining table and coordinating the vintage dining chairs with the living room armchairs and library banquette for ample seating for large parties, and using a playful yet sophisticated palette of historic blues, browns, and creams in different configurations throughout the home.
